Korauna in Uttar Pradesh is getting all the attention it never wished for

Saying that we are all living in the time of Corona won’t be incorrect. Who would have thought that the virus outbreak, something that we had seen only in sci-fi movies, will come true one day and we will become characters in it. Amid all this, a small village in Uttar Pradesh is in the limelight for all the wrong reasons, that too, for its name! Just 90 km from Lucknow, the capital city of Uttar Pradesh, is this small hamlet of Korauna and now you know the reason for the village and the villagers’ distress.

The location

The village, with a population of 9000, is located in Sitapur district and falls under Mishrikh tehsil of Uttar Pradesh. The tiny hamlet has been here for decades, but it is only now, with the Coronavirus outbreak, that it is getting all the attention it never wished or asked for. The residents of the village opine that they are treated differently when they introduce themselves and reveal the name of the place to which they belong.

The villagers are complaining of being ridiculed for the name of the village and are being treated as pariahs. A number of villagers also said that their relatives have now started mocking them and the village by saying they will never visit Korauna ever.

Almost overnight, Korauna village has become a subject of mockery for outsiders because of its name, which is eerily similar to the deadly Coronavirus that has swept the world off its feet.

Religious significance

Not many are aware of the fact that Korauna is also the first halt in the 84-Kosi Parikrama. This is a pilgrimage undertaken by thousands, a fortnight after the festival of Holi, every year. But this year, because of the virus outbreak, the religious yatra was also cancelled.
