Snowfall brings travellers to Kashmir after a bleak year

Tourism industry is one of the worst-hit industries ever since COVID-19 hit the world. It led to strict lockdowns across the world, bringing international travel to a grinding halt. Kashmir was seeing lesser tourists ever since the abrogation of Article 370 in last August. In what has come as good news, travellers are again making their way to the beautiful valley, nudged by the snowfall season that has already set in for this winter.

Reportedly, Gulmarg is already covered with fresh snow and more snowfall is expected in the upper as well as lower regions of Kashmir. November 15 saw more than 500 travellers arriving at the Sringar Airport, which is the highest number of arrivals in a single day in the past seven months. While the number is meagre as compared to any other tourist destination, it certainly as a silver lining for the flailing industry.

Most of the visitors in November are from metropolitan cities, including Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and Bengaluru. Authorities and local tour operators see the arrival as positive and as baby steps to revive tourism in the region. The number of arrivals is expected to pick further pace as the meteorological department has predicted more snowfall in the coming months. It is also reported that events such as snow carnivals and other promotional activities in Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Srinagar will also boost tourism.

The current arrivals of tourists in Kashmir has also been attributed to the drying up of international travel, with bleak chances of revival anytime soon.
