COVID-19 update: Goa tourism won’t restart in July, says the state government

Goa, one of the prime beach holiday destinations in India, won’t allow tourists in the month of July. Michael Lobo, Minister for Science and Technology, said that restarting tourist activities in Goa won’t be possible in July, given the terrible Coronavirus situation.

The minister told TOI, “If the Covid situation doesn’t improve, we can’t get tourists.” Informing more about the situation, he said that in July, Goa is mostly visited by domestic tourists from Delhi and Gurgaon.

He said, “Most flights come to Goa from Mumbai and Delhi. Even if the tourists are from elsewhere, their connecting flight to Goa is from Mumbai or Delhi.”

As of now, both these prime Indian cities, Mumbai and Delhi are worst hit by the virus. So, unless flights don’t restart from these cities, Goa can’t expect much business from tourism in July.

For Goa, tourism is a major revenue generating industry. And as per data, domestic tourists have helped improve Goa’s economy for a long time now. The number of domestic tourists in Goa has gone up to more than 70 lakh (in 2019) from 6.8 lakh (in 1985).

Stressing on the fact that people right now don’t want to travel, the Minister said, “If younger people cannot travel, how will couples travel? I cannot expect the tourism industry to start until there is a vaccine, which will take time.”

It was only last month that Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant had said that the decision to restart tourism in the state will be taken within a week but now it doesn’t seem so.

However, Mr. Lobo said that the state has started getting bookings for October from tourists from Russia and the UK.

Goa, after being declared Corona free, was infected again with the virus. As of now, the state has 1198 confirmed Coronavirus cases and the number is only increasing.
