COVID-19 leads Indian Railways to cancel more than 80 trains, hikes platform ticket prices

Indian Railways has cancelled more than 80 trains due to low occupancy and also as a precaution to stop the spread of deadly Coronavirus. A set of guidelines has been issued to zonal railways, stating that any employee suffering from any of the symptoms, such as runny nose, cough, fever, or difficulty in breathing, should be kept away from the handling of the food business.

The guidelines also stated that all catering staff should maintain personal hygiene as per the standards set by FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India).

As per the railway officials, Central Railways (CR) has cancelled 23 trains, Western Railways (WR) cancelled 10 trains, South-Central Railways cancelled 29 trains, Northern Railway Zone cancelled 5 trains, whereas the Southeastern Railway Zone cancelled 9 trains. Some of the long-haul trains are also included in the list.

Platform tickets at more than 200 railway stations have been hiked from INR 10 to INR 50 to discourage gathering at stations.
