Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics Games will not have overseas spectators this year

It has now been confirmed that overseas spectators will not be permitted to attend the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics Games. The world class event that is being held at Tokyo this year is a much anticipated gaming event. The Tokyo Olympics was originally meant to be held in 2020, but was postponed due to the outbreak of the COVID-19. It is now being held this year, and is scheduled to begin on July 23, 2021.

The overseas spectator ban was made by the International Olympic Committee, the International Paralympic Committee, the Tokyo metropolitan government, the Tokyo 2020 organising committee, and the government of Japan.

In a joint statement by the above mentioned organisations responsible for the decision it was said that the COVID-19 situation in Japan and other countries are yet to be resolved. It was also said that the new variants of the virus pose a severe threat, as international travel is still quite restricted. The present situation of the pandemic has made it difficult for Japan to open up to overseas spectators.

The five committees further said, “In order to give clarity to ticket-holders living overseas and to enable them to adjust their travel plans at this stage, the parties on the Japanese side have come to the conclusion that they will not be able to enter into Japan at the time of the Olympic and Paralympic Games. This conclusion will further contribute to ensure safe and secure Games for all participants and the Japanese public.”

All tickets that were purchased through the official channels will be refunded.
