Times Square's iconic New Year’s ball dropping to go virtual, for the first time in a century

In a first in more than 100 years, New York City will not be hosting the iconic ball dropping event for the upcoming New Year’s Eve. Instead, the organisers recently announced that due to the COVID pandemic, the event will go virtual, thereby averting the risk of spreading infection as well maintaining adequate social distance.

Referring to this, Tim Tompkins, president of the Times Square Alliance and co-producer of the event with Countdown Entertainment, said that in these crucial fear-filled times, the world desperately needs to come together virtually and symbolically to celebrate the people and things they love and look forward with a sense of renewal and new beginnings.

The Times Square Alliance has also tweeted a video stating, “Times Square New Year’s Eve 2021 is happening visually, virtually, safely. Stay tuned.”

He added that one thing that will never change is the ticking of time and the arrival of a new year at midnight on December 31. However, this year, there will be enhanced and significantly new digital and visual preparations to complement whatever limited live entertainment takes place in Times Square. And since any opportunity to be present in the spot will be determined later or will be extremely limited due to the risk of COVID infection, there will be opportunity for people to take part in the event virtually, no matter where they are.

Elaborating more on this, Jeff Straus, the president of Countdown Entertainment, issued a statement stating, “We will miss everyone this year but we will bring our celebration to you, whether you want to turn off and turn away from the bad news of 2020, or turn to the new year with a sense of hope, renewal and resolution, you’ll be able to join us virtually like never before as part of the Times Square 2021 celebration.”

He added that although COVID-19 has brought despair upon 2020, the New Year event will honour the creative and courageous spirits who have and will help us traverse through these challenging times into the New Year.
