Temples in Kolkata open with new safety measures

Temples in Kolkata have opened their doors for devotees with all new COVID-19 safety measures. As the country is unlocking, a lot many things around us are reopening with appropriate safety protocols. Extra precaution is being taken to safeguard people from the deadly and super contagious Coronavirus.

Now, the temples in Kolkata have also reopened after several safety protocols have been put in place. One of the famous religious sites in West Bengal, the Dakshineshwar Kali Temple reopened on June 13 with these new rules. The temple maintained social distancing, proper sanitisation and had restricted timings.

In fact, on the very first day of reopening (after a gap of nearly two and a half months), the Dakshineshwar Kali Temple recorded more than a thousand visitors. The number of visitors was huge despite the fact that the temple timings were curtailed to 7 AM to 10 AM and 3 PM to 6 PM. No one was allowed to carry flowers or any other offerings here and all the priests were seen in PPEs.

Devotees at the temples were asked to stand in the marked area in the courtyard, maintaining social distance. Then officials scanned each and every devotee with a temperate check machine, sanitised their hands and checked their face masks. Only after these measures, were the devotees allowed to enter the temple in groups of 10.

The other prominent religious centre in Kolkata, the Kalighat Temple, too is preparing itself for reopening next week. One of the prime concerns of the Kalighat committee members is whether to allow devotees in the small sanctum sanctorum or not.

In other small temples of Kolkata, no one was allowed inside. Kushal Chowdhury, spokesperson for temple trust said, “We allowed dry prasad as darshan is incomplete without a small offering. But flowers and bhoga no-no.”

India went under a strict lockdown from March-end and now the country has started unlocking gradually, starting early June. Several offices, malls and religious centres have reopened and the public is allowed, with proper safety measures though.
