Soon ‘COVID-free’ trains will operate between Rome and Milan

Travellers would soon be able to travel between Rome and Milan in COVID-free trains. Recently, Italy’s main train operator announced that it will soon begin testing its COVID-free train rides next month. These trains will be tested on passengers and staff.

Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane CEO Gianfranco Battisti said, “We have chosen the Rome to Milan route for the initial testing phase.” He also said that the first trains will depart at the beginning of April.

“Then, we will implement this for tourist destinations for the summer. It will be a unique opportunity, which will allow people to visit destinations such as Venice and Florence,” he added.

To board these trains, passengers will have to arrive at the station an hour ahead of departure for on-site testing. The testing will be done by the Red Cross and Italian Civil Protection. At present, wearing face masks are required on all trains in Italy, which are operating at 50 percent capacity.

The main train terminal in Rome has now become the country’s first major railway hub to serve as a vaccination point. According to the local reports, more than 1500 shots are being given per day in three mobile tents, set up in the piazza right in front of the station.

The train operator has also introduced a healthcare train that can both treat patients on board and transport them to hospitals. The train features three healthcare carriages, having a capacity of seven patients each. These coaches also have care beds for patients in urgent need of ventilation.

These measures come a day after Italy went into another lockdown due to a sudden spike in COVID-19 cases, with the more contagious variant.
