Sikkim is beautiful beyond words and now that the state has reopened its doors for tourists after months, the tourism industry is expecting a boost soon. The government released a 23-page Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to restart tourism. Now that you can visit again, here are the top five places you must explore when in Sikkim.
Tsomgo Lake
When in Sikkim, you cannot skip the divine Tsomgo Lake, also known as Changu Lake. Set around 38 km from Sikkim’s capital Gangtok, the lake is situated at an altitude of 12400 ft above sea level and is among the highest lakes in India. It remains frozen during the peak winter season, but in summers, it’s just magical. Looking at the mighty mountain’s reflection in the turquoise waters of the lake here is probably one of the most alluring sights!
Nathula Pass
A part of the historic Silk Route, Nathu La Pass is a must-visit sight in Sikkim. It is also known as one of the highest motorable passes in the world, as it lies at a height of 4310 m above the sea level. This gorgeous pass connects Sikkim with Tibet and is only open to Indian citizens.
Yumthang Valley
Yumthang Valley is around 140 km north of Gangtok and is popularly known as Valley of Flowers. One can easily fall in love with this exotic location brimming with hot springs, wild yaks and lush meadows. The valley sits at an altitude of 3564 m and offers stunning views. Calling it a nature lover’s paradise won’t be incorrect. There’s also the famous Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary, which is home to the beautiful rhododendron flowers (also the state flower).
Rumtek Monastery
Sitting on top of a hill, Rumtek Monastery is among the most significant monasteries in the country. Also known as the Dharma Chakra Centre, the monastery belongs to the Kagyu sect of Buddhists from Tibet. The place, surrounded with breathtaking mountains and verdant green landscape, will make your heart skip a beat; it’s that eye pleasing!
Pelling
Pelling is a little paradise on Earth located around 130 km from Gangtok. This incredible town is one of the biggest tourist magnets in Sikkim offering splendid views of the Khangchendzonga mountain and the neighbouring peaks. The picturesque Pelling is blessed with scenic waterfalls, and offers some amazing adventure activities options such as river rafting, kayaking, and trekking.
