Portugal lit up its iconic building, Pacos do Concelho, in shades of the Indian tricolour to express solidarity with the country’s ongoing pandemic condition. It was done by
VisitPortugal to show their support to India and a message of hope. Set in the heart of the downtown, this 70 m high building is noted for its carillon clock.
Porto in Northern Portugal also hosted the EU-India Leader’s Hybrid Meeting last week in May at Palacio de Cristal.
Claudia Matias, Director, VisitPortugal in India said, “Portugal expresses its solidarity and a message of hope and strength to all Indians in this challenging time in their fight against the pandemic. We are sending across our deepest fast recovery wishes to India, by illuminating with Indian tricolour flag an iconic landmark in Porto.”
A World Heritage City, Porto is renowned for its rich culture and tradition. The city is also home to some historic monuments including the legendary Luís I bridge, the Cathedral and the Church of São Francisco.
The coastal city is a historical treasure trove and is also known for its wine production. The small cobbled streets passing through merchants’ houses and cafes is an experience to cherish. The 19th century Palácio de Bolsa (palace) here was constructed only to impress potential European investors.
The city is also home to one of the oldest bookshops in the world, Lello. It is the same bookstore that inspired the globally renowned author J.K. Rowling of the
Harry Potter series.
