A Passage to India

A Passage to India (1984) is one fascinating movie that showed the best of India on-screen. The cinema, based on the famous book by EM Forster, was directed by David Lean. The plot dates back to the year 1920 and displays the quaint city of Bankipur, a suburb of Patna, Bihar. It also shows the famous Barabar Caves located in the Jehanabad District of Bihar. The movie is about the journey of two English women and one Indian man, Adela, Mrs. Moore, and Aziz (played by Victor Banerjee).

Eat Pray Love

Eat Pray Love (2010), also based on a novel, is a women centric Hollywood flick starring Julia Roberts. The movie reels the character of a divorced lady, who comes to India in search of peace and spirituality. The whole country is shown from her journey. It best captured the light and sounds of the country’s capital city, Delhi, and the then the rural atmosphere of Pataudi, Haryana.

Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani

This is considered one of the best Bollywood travel flicks directed by Ayan Mukherjee. The movie captures the journey of two characters, Bunny (Ranbir Kapoor) and Naina (Deepika Padukone). The movie was shot in the beautiful hill station of Manali, then goes on capturing the royalty of Udaipur in Rajasthan. Parts of the movie were also shot in Kashmir’s Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Srinagar.

Jab We Met

Jab We Met is a train and road journey of two strangers who met on a train. Their journey takes them through the lonely roads of Ratlam to stunning landscapes of Manali and Naggar in Himachal and then to the green farmlands of Bhatinda.

The Darjeeling Limited

The Darjeeling Limited is the movie of three brothers, who come to India after the death of their father to find peace and resolve their personal family matters. Starring Owen Wilson, Adrien Brody, Jason Schwartzman and Irrfan Khan, the movie takes us through the journey of India and shows the beauty of Indian Himalayas in the hilly set of Udaipur.

Shuddh Desi Romance

This one will take you through the colourful street markets of Jaipur to the city’s iconic Raj Mandir cinema and then to the blue city Jodhpur’s majestic Mehrangarh Fort. In Shuddh Desi Romance, the Pink City of Jaipur is probably one of the lead characters.

This cinema takes you through roads that go to the remote Sangla Valley in Himachal Pradesh, it covers the beauty of Aru Valley and Chandanwari, Pahalgam, Kashmir like never before. Dil Chahta Hai

This one is probably a cult classic directed by Farhan Akhtar and still makes in the top list of travel movies. The beautiful beaches of Goa are probably best captured in Dil Chahta Hai. This is the story of three best buddies, whose life changes after they finish college and enter the real world.

Chennai Express

Chennai Express is all about south India and the movie successfully managed to show the real side of that part of the country. From framing the scenic Dudhsagar Falls in Goa to the lush hill town of Munnar in Kerala and capturing the picturesque roads leading to Rameshwaram, every single frame in the movie was breathtaking.
