Medina in Saudi Arabia makes to WHO’s list of World’s Healthiest Cities

The world knows Medina more as the holy pilgrimage centre for the followers of Islam. But now, the revered city of Medina has entered WHO’s list of World’s Healthiest Cities. It is an achievement as Medina is also believed to be the first city having a population of more than two million to secure the prestigious spot.

According to media reports, a total of 22 governments, charity agencies, communities, and volunteers helped Medina reach the required standards to secure its spot in the WHO accreditation.

WHO representatives told a local media firm, “A healthy city is one that is continually creating and improving those physical and social environments, and expanding those community resources that enable people to mutually support each other in performing all the functions of life, and developing [them] to their maximum potential.”

The government of Medina had introduced a programme to record all the data on an electronic platform for WHO to review. It also included a strategic partnership with Taibah University. The 100 members committee was chaired by Dr. Abdul Aziz Assarani, the President of the university.

With this success, WHO has asked the university to offer training programmes to other agencies too that wish to be a part of the healthy city programme.
