The Maldives bars travellers from a number of South Asian countries, including India

The Maldives, one of the most favourite tourist destination in the region, has barred travellers from a number of South Asian countries including India in the wake of COVID-19 outbreak. The idyllic beach getaway is currently facing one of the worst COVID-19 outbreaks ever since the pandemic hit the world and has come up with a number of restrictions for travellers to safeguard its citizens.

With the move, the Maldives has become the latest country to restrict travel from India. No tourist visas would be issued to travellers from India and the above mentioned nations by the Maldives starting May 13.

The new restriction will be imposed on May 13, 2021, till further notice. Other countries included in the list, apart from India, are Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Pakistan. Reportedly, the Maldives is currently seeing one of the world’s fastest growing COVID-19 outbreaks. The government has also restricted the residents of the capital, Male, to stay indoors from 4 PM to 4 AM. The restriction on its citizens is expected to stay in place for a week more. A number of gatherings are also barred for now.
