Independence Day 2020: Indian Flag to be hoisted at iconic Niagara Falls on Aug 15

India is all set to celebrate its 74th Independence Day this year. It will also be the first time in history that the Indian Tricolour will be hoisted at the iconic Niagara Falls in Canada on the same day.

The flag-raising ceremony will take place on the evening of August 15. The ceremony at the famous scenic spot will indeed be a part of celebrations, which will be taking place across the country. Amid the Coronavirus pandemic and given the current restrictions due to the crisis, several regular events have now been migrated online, including the traditional hoisting of the flag at the Indian High Commission in Ottawa and the Consulates in Toronto and Vancouver.

Apart from this, other significant locations in Canada, including the iconic 553 m tall CN Tower in downtown Toronto, which is one of the most famous skyscrapers in the world, will also be hoisting the Indian flag. Also, the three-dimensional Toronto sign near City Hall in Toronto, which is also a popular tourist attraction, will be illuminated in the colours of Indian flag, much to the joy of the large number of Indians living in Canada.

These displays will last throughout the weekend. While the flag raising event at Niagara Falls will take place on the evening of August 15, the flag will flap over the CN Tower on Sunday, whereas the Toronto sign will remain illuminated on both the evenings.

Referring to this, India’s Consul General to Toronto Apoorva Srivastava said that it is a matter of great pride that this Independence Day, iconic locations like Niagara Falls, CN Tower and the Toronto sign will be illuminated in Indian Tricolour.

Toronto usually witnesses the signature event, the India Day Parade, every year for Indian community in the country. It attracted as many as 85000 people last year at its downtown venue. However, this year due to the ongoing crises, the said event will take place virtually, which will then be streamed live.
