In-flight meals and drinks allowed in Indian airlines

Air travellers in the country won’t have to carry food items with them on-board from now as in-flight meals are (re) allowed in Indian flights by the Civil Aviation Ministry. Meal and drink services were back on May 25, but on-board services were still banned. While food and beverages were allowed on international flights, the services were not allowed on domestic flights. Not only this, passengers were also not allowed to get their own food on board.

But now, the SOP has been revised for flights and the new SOP allows Indian airlines to serve food and beverages on board. Even on international flights, passengers can enjoy hot meals and alcoholic beverages.

The Civil Aviation Ministry, in its order, said, “Airlines may serve pre-packed snacks/meals/pre-packed beverages on domestic flights depending on the duration of the flight.” On the other hand, the international airlines and charter flight operators can serve hot meals and limited beverages as per the standard practices.

In addition, the ministry has asked airlines to only use disposable plates and cutlery to serve meals to passengers. The directive also said that the airline crew will also have to wear a fresh pair of gloves every time they serve meals.

All the flight services were suspended in the country because of the COVID-19 pandemic on March 25. It was only under the Vande Bharat Mission that domestic and a few special international flights were operational.
