Thailand is now planning to permit oversea travellers to quarantine in resorts to promote post COVID tourism in the country. The announcement was made by the Tourism Minister on Thursday, wherein that he will propose a plan for foreigners to undertake COVID-19 quarantine in prime tourist hotspots. This means that outside travellers can stay at beach resorts too.
Recently, the tourism sector in Thailand had to suffer a lot due to the Coronavirus pandemic. With their hotel quarantine plan, the country is hoping to revive their economy. The plan is expected to begin in April or May in tourist popular regions including Krabi, Phuket, Surat Thani, Chonburi and Chiang Mai, said Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn.
On choosing these specific provinces, the minister said, “Why these provinces? They are popular among tourists who usually stay for quite a long time, for one to three months.”
Tourists will have to quarantine for two weeks. However, if their test comes negative after three days, tourists will be allowed out of their rooms in the hotel area.
Last month in February, Thailand hosted golfers from South Korea for its new golf quarantine programme. The government also expects a travel bubble plan with other countries. On Sunday, Thailand started its vaccination campaign.
In 2020, Thailand’s tourism revenue dropped to 332 billion baht ($10.94 billion) from 1.91 trillion baht in 2019. And this year too, the agencies are expecting only 3.2 million foreign visitors in Thailand because of the pandemic.
