Canada extends international travel restrictions with second wave of COVID-19

Canada has announced to extend restrictions on international travel amid the ongoing second wave of the Coronavirus pandemic in the country. The step is being taken to prevent further spread of the Coronavirus.

The restrictions, which were initially imposed on March 16, ban most foreign nationals from entering Canada for non-essential travel. The Canada Government in order to limit the spread of COVID-19 has now extended restrictions for all travellers entering the country until January 2021.

Referring to this, Canada’s Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Bill Blair stated the travel restrictions on US citizens would be extended until December 2021, whereas restrictions on people visiting from other countries will be in place till January 2021.

The government will, however, allow exemptions for a pilot project with the Alberta Province as an alternative to quarantines. The Minister further added that the government will continue to evaluate travel restrictions and prohibitions, as well as the requirement to quarantine or isolate on an ongoing basis to ensure Canadians remain healthy and safe.

Travel between the United States and Canada usually sees around 400000 border crossings per day, with the number dropping ever since the pandemic restrictions were put in place.

Travellers, who are allowed to visit Canada despite the ban, include students, essential workers, parents, children, spouses, or guardians of Canadian citizens, who will still have to undergo quarantine for 14 days upon arrival.
