Fans of anime were back at the Jackson Convention Complex for the first time in two years. The anime fest was a success for the first time ever as a two-day event. “It makes me feel comfortable because I’m a cosplayer, so I like seeing other people around me cosplaying as well,” Candice Fralix said.”I love to connect. Because it’s a no-judgment zone, everyone comes here to have a good time. So, I think it’s really cool that they have this type of event for us. You know, people like us to, you know, hang out like this and not be judged by anyone else, you know,” Dwayne Jefferson said.”Braves beanie and glasses guy: We want people to come here and feel like they’re comfortable putting on like cat ears or wearing a tail or whatever. Like no one is going to make fun of each other,” Greg Hanks said. The event was canceled last year due to COVID-19, and the folks we spoke to said they were excited when it was coming back.”When it gets canceled, you know your heart breaks because everybody you know is looking forward to this. I love being a local show like this. We had a hometown, you know, it’s awesome,” Robert Valentine said. There were panel discussions with voice actors also at the event.”To actually hear the person that is that voice doing it right in front of you, that’s gotta be like the biggest, you know, comparisons like that would be like meeting your favorite sports star,” said Hanks. “It’s one of these places where you can celebrate what you like and have fun doing it, and you know, for a lot of these kids, this is the only place they can come and find people that like the same stuff they do.”Organizers said they hope next year’s event will be even bigger.
