Forest fires reported from Uttarakhand

Uttarakhand is currently burning in a forest fire, which has continued for the last four days, and is now a cause of concern. According to reports, as many as 46 such forest fires have been raging in the hill state of Uttarakhand over the last four days. Uttarakhand, known for its astonishing natural beauty is full of forests and wildlife.

The forest fires this year have seen a drop from 1000 fires that were reported last year. Reportedly, a year before last, there were instances of 3000 such fires. Thus, the numbers of fires this year has been considerably low till now. There are reports of rain from both Uttarakhand and Himachal currently, which might further help to douse these fires.

The raging forest fire also owes to rising temperature and hot winds that are making their way into north India. Experts say that this is the warmest region in the world.

As of now, two people have lost their lives in the fire, and further reports are yet to be made on the situation at hand. With a forest area of 38000 sq km at stake, this could be one of the worst disasters faced by the state, and India in general. Until now, an area of 51.34 ha of forest area has been affected by the spreading fire. The Kumaon region accounted for 21 forest fires, while the Garhwal region reported 16 forest fires. The forests of Uttarakhand are also home to numerous plant species, some of which are extremely rare.

As #savethehimalayas trend on Twitter, there is yet another problem that India is currently facing. A swarm of locusts have been making the rounds of several states, and has reached north India. The states of Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh have been affected by these locusts; according to news reports, these swarms are now headed towards Delhi.
