Sabarmati Ashram in Gujarat reopens for visitors after ten months

The iconic Sabarmati Ashram in Gujarat is all set to welcome visitors once again. The historic ashram of Mahatma Gandhi and an important tourist attraction in Gujarat, Sabarmati Ashram had closed its gates ten months back when the pandemic hit the globe.

After remaining shut for a long time, the authorities decided to reopen its gate officially for visitors. The ashram will strictly adhere to all the COVID-19 health protocols, from social distancing to sanitising in the premises.

Atul Pandya, the director of the ashram, told PTI, “The ashram was shut for visitors since March 20 last year following the coronavirus outbreak. From Monday, we have once again opened the premises for visitors. People can visit the ashram between 10 am and 5 pm. We have deployed our staff to guide them to maintain social distancing.

As far as the safety is concerned, the official informed that sanitiser dispensers have been installed at 18 places in the premises. And as of now, only two places inside the ashram have been opened to the public, the museum and Hriday Kunj, where Mahatma Gandhi lived with his wife. The khadi cloth shop, book store and charkha gallery are still shut.

Considering the current situation, visitors will not be allowed to touch anything inside. That’s why shops and the charkha gallery won’t be open. The number of visitors at some places is also restricted.

The ashram is managed by the Sabarmati Ashram Preservation and Memorial Trust. And before the Coronavirus outbreak, the ashram used to be a major domestic and foreign travellers draw in the city. A former home of the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi the ashram has played a vital role in India’s Independence movement.
