Leh’s Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport is ready to get a world-class upgrade, with a state-of-the-art terminal building. The airport expansion will cost about INR 480 crores, and is going to have world-class facilities for guests. The construction is expected to be completed by December 2022.
The airport itself is fascinating, and flying into it gives you dramatic scenes of the Himalayas. It is located at a height of 10682 ft above sea level, and is a great alternative to a road trip to Leh that is often a preferred choice among travellers.
The all-new airport is set to be passenger-friendly, with a host of amenities. In fact, the expansion includes a utility building of about 3340 sq m area. The new terminal building is also going to be an exciting addition, as it will have a 4-star Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment. The terminal will also have 18 check-in counters, and an Inline Baggage Handling System.
With the construction of the new terminal, Leh airport will be able to handle five to six flights at a time. The terminal will boast three aerobridges as well, and accommodate about 200-250 cars at a time. Currently, the Leh airport is equipped to handle nine lakh passengers per year, and this expansion will allow it to handle twenty lakh passengers annually.
Now, we can expect more tourists in Leh, and this means we have to be more cautious regarding how we treat the environment here. It is a paradise that should not be lost at any cost.
